Mill42 - Manufacturing Dreams - Charbel Abou Zeidan


True chameleon at heart, Charbel nonetheless chooses to devote his time to photography: as of June 24th, he will unveil his first solo exhibition, casting light on Wevelgem’s Manufacture Franco Belge through huge C-prints. Presented inside a new gallery space inside the Carpet Manufacture, they depict the building with talent. Charbel gives it a soul.

Through his pictures, the vast industrial spaces originally built in 1923 echo: tracing back the Manufacture’s noble past, Charbel not only seizes the Grande Dame’s history but also captures its modernity. On the surface of the prints, the old machinery vibrates, cylinders spin, creating huge graphic webs. Patiently, untouched collections of spare parts unveil their oily shapes in the ambient darkness. Giving a colourful pace and rhythm to cathedral alleys, 1920s jacquard cards pile up in towering shelves. The patina of a plank floor, a ladder awaiting an order or the power of steel claws swallowing coloured threads… the Manufacture comes to life.

A first exhibition that captures, with precision and poetry, the sole nature of the old industrial plant, and reveals it all the way into its forgotten corners. 


Caméléon capable d’une rare transversalité créative, Charbel décide pourtant de renouer avec la photographie : aussi, du 24 juin, il expose, pour la première fois, en solo, de larges tirages de la Manufacture Franco Belge de tapis à Wevelgem (Belgique). Présentés dans un nouvel espace-galerie aménagé au sein de la Manufacture, ils dépeignent l’âme du bâtiment. Une mise en abîme photographique bienvenue.

 Au contact de ses photos, les vastes espaces de la manufacture de 1923 reprennent vie : mémoire de cette grande dame, Charbel en retrace et saisit le noble passé. Sur les clichés, les métiers à tisser bruissent et les bobines tournent, déployant d’immenses enchevêtrements graphiques. Patientes, des familles de pièces détachées offrent leur profil saillant d’huile dans la semi-pénombre. Animant de longues allées Cathédrale, les cartons jacquard – utilisées depuis les années 20 – s’entassent esthétiquement dans de grandes bibliothèques ouvertes. Un parquet raboté par les décennies, un escabeau en attente comme des points de suspension, les puissantes mâchoires de l’acier qui se ferment sur des fils de couleur… la magie opère.

Une première exposition qui parvient à capturer l’essence même de la Manufacture, avec justesse et poésie, jusque dans ses moindres recoins oubliés.
